Fay Weldon knows this Edwardian world cold, and the Earl of Dilberne's financially-strained household makes for genuinely absorbing family-saga drama as the first book in a trilogy. There's a mercenary-marriage and courtesan subplot handled with period restraint rather than anything explicit, and Katherine Kellgren's narration is a real asset — she's one of the best in the period-drama lane.
