Eggers brings real atmospheric power to the Alaskan wilderness and lands some genuinely dark comedy, but the novel never fully earns its ambition — Josie stays frustratingly opaque across four hundred-plus pages and the kids exist mainly to create plot friction. A mixed bag that fans of Eggers's earlier work will find more rewarding than newcomers.
