Duke University Press and the HOPE journal pedigree confirm this is serious scholarship, and the focus on higgling as a window into the tension between efficiency and fairness in markets is genuinely interesting economic history. But this is a thirty-year-old academic anthology aimed at a sliver of readers, and subsequent scholarship has built well beyond it. For economic historians it remains a reference point; for everyone else it is squarely out of scope.
