Hiaasen's Newbery Honor novel is funny, morally grounded, and genuinely hard to put down — the burrowing owl mystery hooks reluctant readers almost immediately, and Roy's slow-burning courage gives the book real emotional weight. Parents of sensitive readers should know the bullying scenes are detailed and a broken nose and brief domestic violence references are present, but for the right 10-to-14-year-old this is exactly the kind of environmental-justice adventure that builds lifelong readers. One of the stronger entries in the middle-grade canon.
