Howling Dark

Christopher Ruocchio · 2020
88/100
👍 Worth It

Christopher Ruocchio's second Sun Eater novel is literary space opera of unusual ambition — Hadrian Marlowe's first-person account of his decades-long search for the lost world of Vorgossos carries genuine philosophical weight, drawing on Catholic imagery, classical humanism, and the moral cost of idealism. Barnes and Noble named it one of the best SF/F books of July 2019, and the Dragon Award nomination recognized its standing in the genre. The intellectual depth and emotional resonance are exceptional. The honest and necessary caveat for this site: the content is substantial — warfare, torture, psychological darkness, morally complex choices — and it is not appropriate for children or younger teens. It's also the second book in a long series and not a standalone entry point. For adult readers willing to meet it on its own terms, it's remarkable work.
