One of the genuinely foundational novels of modernism — Hamsun's hallucinatory, plotless portrait of a starving writer in Oslo anticipated stream-of-consciousness fiction by decades and still reads as raw and strange. It is not comfortable, and Hamsun's later Nazi collaboration casts a real shadow that readers deserve to know about. But as a literary artifact and a study of psychological disintegration, it is irreplaceable.
