Kantor's 1960 novella is historically significant as an early template for alternate history and remains readable in a single sitting, but its optimistic framing of Confederate victory glosses over slavery and racial justice in ways that later scholars have rightly called out. Harry Turtledove's introduction in the 2001 edition helpfully contextualizes its place in the genre. Worth reading as a genre artifact and starting point for reflection, but not as a serious exercise in historical reckoning.
