Ivanov
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov Β· 1999
74/100
π Worth It
Chekhov's early play is a psychologically dense portrait of paralysis and moral failure that anticipates everything he'd do masterfully in his mature work β Ivanov himself is one of the most honestly drawn self-destructive characters in the canon. The suicide climax and pervasive despair require a prepared reader, and the 'Finance' catalog assignment is plainly wrong (this is drama, not a finance title). For students of Russian literature or serious theater readers, it's absolutely worth the time.
