Havill handles the hardest move in children's books — letting the main character not get what she wants — with grace and without false comfort. Jamaica makes a real sacrifice, and the gratitude that follows feels earned rather than imposed. O'Brien's soft watercolors and the series' quietly inclusive cast make this the kind of book that improves on rereading, and Kirkus's 'winning simplicity' is exactly right.
