Jaws

Peter Benchley · 1991
78/100
👍 Worth It

Peter Benchley's 1974 novel is the thriller that launched the blockbuster era, and the premise remains genuinely effective — a great white shark terrorizes a small resort town while the mayor suppresses warnings to protect tourist revenue, and Police Chief Brody gets squeezed between public safety and economic politics. The social commentary is sharper than the film gives the book credit for. That said, readers expecting the movie will find a considerably darker text: the novel includes an explicit extramarital affair and graphic sexual content that Steven Spielberg wisely cut. Literary critics in 1974 found Benchley's prose workmanlike at best. This is adult content — not appropriate for younger readers — and worth it primarily for thriller fans curious about the source.
