Peter Benchley's 1974 novel is the thriller that launched the blockbuster era, and the premise remains genuinely effective — a great white shark terrorizes a small resort town while the mayor suppresses warnings to protect tourist revenue, and Police Chief Brody gets squeezed between public safety and economic politics. The social commentary is sharper than the film gives the book credit for.
