👍 Worth It

Ellison's prose at its best is extraordinary — passages in this book match the lyrical intensity of Invisible Man — and the central story of Bliss becoming Sunraider is one of the most provocative meditations on race, identity, and American self-invention in the literary canon. The honest caveat is that the unfinished manuscript means the structure is unwieldy and the resolution simply absent. Serious readers of American literature should engage with it, but go in knowing this is a magnificent fragment, not a complete novel.
