Orwell's portrait of a man who chooses poverty as a moral stance and then suffers for it is psychologically precise and often darkly funny — it is sharp social satire even if Orwell himself called it a pot-boiler. Go in knowing it is relentlessly bleak and that Gordon Comstock is designed to be maddening, and you will find more here than the author gave himself credit for.
