McCaughrean is one of the finest living retellers of world myth, and this anthology's genuinely global scope — Bolivia, Togo, Japan, and the Middle East alongside the Western canon — makes it stand out in a crowded field. The five-page story format is perfect for families and classrooms, and the prose is consistently excellent. Faith-family readers should preview given the mythological and pagan source material, but as literature for middle-grade readers it is hard to beat.
