Melvyn Bragg's ambition in tracing working-class Cumbrian life across three generations earned genuine critical praise, and this final volume is a serious piece of British regional fiction. The catch is that it works best as the payoff of a trilogy, so coming in cold means missing most of its emotional weight. If you've read the first two Tallentire novels and want closure, it's worth your time — otherwise, start from the beginning or skip this one until you're ready for the full journey.
