This is the book that basically started the whole field of leadership studies, and you can feel why -- Burns builds a genuinely original idea (transformational vs. transactional leadership) out of real history, not buzzwords. It's dense, academic reading, not a breezy weekend book, but if you want the root of where modern leadership thinking comes from, this is it.
