Maude actually knew Tolstoy personally, and it shows in how warmly and clearly he tells this story. It's a lovely, condensed way into Tolstoy's dramatic life and his turn toward faith and pacifism, even if it leans a bit protective of its subject and shows its age scholarship-wise.
