London Match
The third and final book of Deighton's Game, Set and Match trilogy brings Bernard Samson back to London to root out a traitor inside MI6, even as he grapples with the knowledge that his own wife has been a KGB operative all along. The plotting is a procedural puzzle more than a shoot-em-up, and Deighton maintains intellectual tension across a dense web of bureaucratic suspicion and Cold War gamesmanship. The Berlin and London atmosphere is first-rate. Two honest caveats: the climax, a prisoner exchange that ends in violence, lands slightly anticlimactically after the buildup, and the book is essentially unreadable without the two prior novels. Adult readers who've invested in the trilogy will find it a thoroughly satisfying conclusion; everyone else should start at Berlin Game.
