John Green's 2005 debut won the Printz Award and launched one of YA literature's most important careers. Miles Halter's search for a 'Great Perhaps' at a boarding school in Alabama, the magnetic and reckless Alaska Young, and the devastating Before/After structure that drives toward grief and guilt — these are genuine literary achievements. The exploration of loss and meaning is emotionally honest in a way that resonates for older teens and adults. But this review has to be straightforward about content: there is explicit sexual activity described in memorable detail, consistent profanity, and underage drinking and smoking throughout. It appears regularly on challenged-books lists for exactly these reasons. For faith families or readers who avoid explicit content, this is a real concern. For mature older teens and adults who can engage it on its own terms, it is powerful work.
