The personal anchor here is genuinely touching — naming the Rapunzel protagonist after the author's grandmother gives this retelling an emotional core that most in the genre lack. The mystery thread around the mother's death also pushes it past standard fare. Self-published production limits how far the story's polish goes, and critical visibility is thin enough that it's hard to know how the execution holds up over a full read. Worth a look for devoted fairy tale retelling fans, but hard to recommend broadly.
