The fifth Maximum Ride novel puts Max and her genetically engineered, winged Flock in the middle of an environmental thriller — her mother kidnapped, the Navy enlisting teenage bird-kids, and a mysterious underwater threat off Hawaii. Patterson's strength is momentum: the book moves fast, the action set pieces are exciting, and Max herself is a capable, self-determined protagonist. The environmental activism subplot adds real substance. The content note for families: violence here is frequent and intense — injuries, fights, broken bones, and deaths appear throughout — though it stops short of graphic gore.
