Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala are back, this time chasing a Chinese criminal syndicate engineering a pandemic-grade virus while a top-secret jellyfish lab goes missing off Micronesia. The premise is genuinely topical and the prologue hooks quickly — Cussler and Kemprecos know how to open a thriller. The globe-trotting pacing is reliable, and the Austin-Zavala dynamic remains entertaining for fans who've followed the NUMA Files this far. The real limitation is craft: dialogue can clunk, and several reviewers found the climax deflates the tension it spent the whole book building. This is also book eight in a series, so newcomers will feel the gaps. Solid mid-series comfort food for established fans, but not the place to start, and not strong enough to recommend beyond that audience.
