Carter's central idea — that self-esteem is the real foundation for healthy relationships — is genuinely sound, and his commitmentphobia research gave the book real credibility in the 1990s. But three decades later the bullet-point format feels reductive, the gender framing is dated, and the core message has been said more sharply elsewhere. There are better books doing this same work today.
