The atmospheric setup is one of the better things about this Little Mermaid retelling — it pulls you in with genuine mood and an intriguing mystery around Pearl's origins. The problem is the back third, where the pacing collapses into a rushed resolution that does not deliver on what was promised. Younger YA readers in the 12–14 range may not notice, but anyone older is likely to finish feeling shortchanged.
