Lisa Kleypas at her best writes historical romance that actually cares about its characters, and the Hathaways series launch is a fine example — Cam Rohan is a genuinely compelling hero whose Romani heritage is handled with more sensitivity than the genre typically manages, and the Hathaway siblings as an ensemble give the story real warmth and forward momentum. Publishers Weekly's 'riveting from start to finish' is earned. Readers who want clean romance should look elsewhere — the doors are open and the mature themes are real — but for grown-up historical romance fans this is a series worth starting.
