Missing Joseph

Missing Joseph is the sixth Inspector Lynley novel, and it shifts the spotlight away from Lynley and Havers to let St. James and Deborah carry most of the investigation into a Lancashire vicar's suspicious death. George's real strength here is atmosphere — the village of Winslough feels genuinely lived-in, and the psychological portrait of a parent driven to terrible lengths is unsettling in the best way. The honest caveat: Lynley and Havers fans will feel shortchanged by their reduced roles, the dialogue runs long, and a graphic rape subplot makes this one firmly adult reading. If you love slow-burn British procedurals with deep character work, there is craft to admire — but the content load earns the caution.
