One of the half-dozen novels most worth reading in American literature — Ahab's monomania is one of fiction's great portraits of obsession consuming everything it touches, and Ishmael's voice remains one of the most companionable in the canon. The cetology chapters will test your patience, and they should: Melville means to slow you down, to make you sit inside this world. Come prepared for difficulty and you will find a book that rewards you for decades.
