Moby-Dick is one of those books whose reputation is so large it can feel intimidating, but the ambition is fully earned — Melville is doing things with obsession, hubris, and the unknowable that no other American novel quite matches. The cetology digressions are the real test of commitment, and not every reader will want to pass it. Those who do will find a work that remains philosophically alive in ways that most 19th-century fiction does not.
