Morning Star

Pierce Brown · 2016
82/100
👍 Worth It

Darrow starts this finale imprisoned and broken, and Pierce Brown does not let him off easy from there. The scope is enormous — interplanetary war, political betrayal, revolutionary ethics — and the emotional payoffs for readers who've followed the full trilogy are real. Entertainment Weekly and Publishers Weekly both praised it, and the Goodreads Choice Award reflects genuine fan enthusiasm. But the content demands a clear-eyed warning: this book contains torture, mutilation, depictions of nuclear genocide, cannibalism, and explicit sexual content. It earns its 17+ rating. There's also a rounding-off of some character arcs that feels a little too tidy given the brutality that preceded it. For the right adult reader already invested in the trilogy, it's a strong conclusion. For everyone else, start at book one — or don't start at all if extreme violence is a hard limit.
