Stephen Fry brings his considerable wit and learning to the Greek myths, starting at Chaos and working through the Olympians and their complicated relationships with humanity. The voice is warm and conversational — Fry clearly loves this material — and readers with no background in mythology will find it accessible without feeling talked down to. The strength here is how naturally ancient stories come alive in his hands. The honest caution is that Greek mythology is not sanitized territory: Zeus's affairs, assault, incest, cannibalism, child death, and suicide are all present, handled with humor rather than sensationalism but not removed. The polytheistic worldview is presented on its own terms. Faith families should preview before passing to younger readers.
