Never Split the Difference

Chris Voss · 2017
79/100
👍 Worth It

Chris Voss spent years as the FBI's lead international kidnapping negotiator, and he uses that experience intelligently here — each chapter opens with a vignette that makes the abstract principle feel life-or-death concrete before drawing it down to everyday business applications. Mirroring, labeling emotions, calibrated questions, the power of no — these techniques are immediately applicable, and readers consistently report trying them the week they finish the book. The argument against splitting the difference, in favor of understanding the other side's emotional reality, is a genuine counter to the Getting to Yes model and worth engaging seriously. Voss occasionally oversells how cleanly FBI hostage tactics translate to lower-stakes negotiations, and the core technique set could be condensed without much loss. But as practical negotiation books go, this one earns its reputation.
