No Talking

Andrew Clements Β· 2009
88/100
πŸ‘ Worth It

Andrew Clements had a gift for finding the one rule that would turn a school upside down, and No Talking is a fine example. When fifth-grader Dave challenges Lynsey to a two-day silence contest β€” three-word sentences only β€” what starts as competitive posturing becomes something genuinely thoughtful about how much noise we make and how little we actually hear. The Gandhi inspiration is woven in naturally, and Clements plays the classroom and teacher chaos for good comedy without losing the real point. It is a slender book, and some readers may wish for more story around the central concept. But for the 8-to-12 crowd, it is clever, quick, and worth the conversation it starts. A solid classroom read.
