After some weaker entries in a long series, Cussler and his son bring the Dirk Pitt adventure back to what fans love: dual high-stakes plotlines, maritime action, Cold War historical threads, and a globe-trotting pace that doesn't let up. If you already know Dirk Pitt, this is a welcome return to form; if you're new to the series, the formula is obvious but effective. Characters remain thin and coincidences pile up, but this is comfort food for thriller readers who enjoy the genre's pleasures without apology.
