On the Steel Breeze

Alastair Reynolds is one of the few writers who can sustain three simultaneous protagonist threads across interstellar distances while keeping the hard SF rigorously grounded, and this second Poseidon's Children volume rewards readers who came through Blue Remembered Earth. The alien mystery at Crucible gives the holoship sections genuine momentum and stakes, and the Campbell nomination reflects the SF community's recognition of the book's ambition. Mid-book pacing drags in places, and the three Chiku voices can blur together, but this is serious space opera doing serious work.
