Self-help ✦ Penny’s Take
Overcoming Depression

👍 Worth It
This was the go-to lay reference on depression and bipolar disorder for good reason — the authors cover symptoms, treatments, and family impact with genuine depth, and psychiatrists like E. Fuller Torrey called it the most comprehensive book of its kind. The caveat is real: this is a third edition from the early 1990s, and treatment options — especially for medications — have changed significantly. It still earns its place for the breadth of its family-and-patient perspective, but pair it with something current.
