Peter F. Hamilton builds a future where humanity has colonized hundreds of planets via wormholes and people live through multiple rejuvenated lifetimes — and then drops an existential alien threat into the middle of it. The world-building here is genuinely extraordinary, and Hamilton weaves political intrigue, detective plot, and first-contact thriller together across a very large cast without losing the thread. The alien civilization feels actually alien, which is rarer than it should be. Fair warnings: this is nearly a thousand pages and ends on a cliffhanger requiring the sequel. It also contains explicit sexual content and violence. Adults who love ambitious space opera will find it well worth the commitment; younger readers and faith audiences should know what they are getting into.
