Digeser does something genuinely difficult — he builds a rigorous secular case for forgiveness as a political instrument without either sentimentalizing it or dismissing it, and he earns engagement from serious scholars in Perspectives on Politics and Political Theory. The questions about who holds authority to forgive and whether victims can be obligated to do so are as live today as in 2001. Dense philosophical argumentation makes this strictly for academic readers, but within that audience it's a strong, original contribution.
