The second Aubrey-Maturin novel pulls off something genuinely rare: a book that's simultaneously a rigorous Napoleonic sea adventure and a Jane Austen-style social comedy, and it makes both feel effortless. Dense nautical terminology will slow new readers down at first, and you really should read Master and Commander first — but readers who commit are rewarded with some of the finest prose historical fiction has to offer.
