Ryle had a gift for plain, piercing prose, and these chapters on prayer, Bible reading, wealth, and the Christian life read — according to every reviewer the dossier surfaces — as urgently as they did in 1879. The chapter on prayer in particular draws unanimous praise, with at least one reader calling it the best thing they have ever read on the subject. At nearly 500 pages it asks for real investment, but for a Protestant or Reformed reader looking for a devotional that takes the life of faith seriously rather than sentimentally, this is a strong and enduring choice.
