Dorothy Hearst's debut is a genuinely ambitious piece of animal fiction — the wolf's-eye viewpoint on the prehistoric dawn of human-wolf coexistence is a fresh angle, and the pack dynamics feel behaviorally grounded rather than anthropomorphized to mush. The violence, including the killing of Kaala's siblings, is real and some readers will find it hard going. For older teens and adults who love nature fiction, this is a rewarding series opener.
