👍 Worth It
Mieville takes the bones of Moby-Dick and rebuilds them into something genuinely strange and alive — a world of infinite railway tracks and carnivorous mole-rats that also manages to be emotionally resonant. It is the most accessible entry point into his work and one of the better YA novels of the decade for readers who want their adventure fiction to have real ideas inside it. Dense vocabulary and embedded political commentary are real hurdles for reluctant readers, but literary-minded twelve-year-olds will love it.
