Revelation Space

Alastair Reynolds · 2013
73/100
👍 Worth It

Alastair Reynolds spent years as an astrophysicist before writing this, and it shows — no faster-than-light shortcuts, relativity respected throughout, and a genuinely unsettling answer to the question of why the galaxy seems so empty. Three storylines weave together across an archaeologist uncovering an extinct alien civilization, a plague-ravaged starship of cybernetically augmented crew, and an assassin on a disease-wracked colony world. The Fermi Paradox dread Reynolds builds is real and memorable. Fair warning: this is a dense, slow, nearly 600-page opening to a series, and the characters can feel emotionally distant even as the ideas dazzle. Content includes body-horror imagery, cybernetic augmentation, and mature themes — adult readers only. For hard SF fans willing to commit, it pays off.
