👍 Worth It

Scott's 1817 historical novel is a genuine landmark — the Jacobite-era Scottish setting is vivid, the moral tensions are real, and the book's influence on the entire historical fiction genre is well documented. The archaic prose and Frank's occasionally passive narration are real friction for modern readers, but readers willing to meet it on its own terms will find the effort worthwhile.
