Alers creates a genuinely warm small-town atmosphere and handles the domestic-abuse backstory with sensitivity, which gives this more emotional weight than many Harlequin Special Editions. But reviewers noted the romantic chemistry between the leads falls flat, and at 224 pages the Harlequin formula does not leave room to build the kind of tension a second-chance story needs to really pay off.
