Samuel Smiles basically invented the self-help genre with this one, and it holds up — real biographical case studies of ordinary people who built extraordinary lives through grit and thrift. The Victorian prose is dense and some attitudes are dated, but the substance here is genuinely foundational. Worth reading if you want to see where this whole genre started.
