Kate Millett's 1970 doctoral dissertation changed what literary criticism could do — her close readings of Lawrence, Miller, Mailer, and Genet exposed misogyny embedded in celebrated prose in a way that was both intellectually rigorous and genuinely shocking at the time. It remains a foundational text that any serious reader of gender studies or 20th-century literary criticism needs to have met. The 2016 reissue with a MacKinnon foreword and Rebecca Mead afterword is the edition to reach for.
