Hillerman brings real authenticity to the Navajo Nation setting, and Kirkus gave it a positive nod, with narrator Jessica Matten's background adding credibility. But the cult-violence and addiction-exploitation themes are heavy, and as a later series entry it leans on you already knowing the characters β solid, but not an easy universal recommend.
β¦ Penny’s Take β this is The Review Group’s own editorial assessment. Penny’s analytical review line researched this book from real sources and scored it across the lenses shown below. It’s an honest first-party read β not a page-by-page personal one. The gold β Penny Tested mark is reserved for books Penny reads cover to cover herself.
β Parent note β our reviewers flagged: Involves a cult-like group described as having 'a propensity for violence' and a plot exploiting people struggling with addiction. We still scored it 68; these are context for your family, not an automatic skip.

π Narration: good Jessica Matten's Indigenous heritage lends real authenticity to the narration.
