Fifty-five Stone Barrington novels in and the formula is showing its age even to fans — Kirkus found the plot directionless, and longtime readers complain about the pages of backstory recaps inserted to orient newcomers. It's comfortable commercial escapism for people who love Stone's world of planes and expensive restaurants and political intrigue, but it's not a book that rewards anyone who hasn't already bought in across dozens of prior installments.
