Jenny Han's debut captures that aching in-between age with real warmth — Shug is easy to root for, and the resolution doesn't wrap things up too neatly, which is exactly right for the audience. The parental alcoholism and neglect are present but handled gently enough for most middle-grade readers, and the Southern small-town atmosphere gives the story genuine texture. Pacing drags a little in the middle, but the emotional honesty more than makes up for it.
