Stuart Bruchey's anthology does serious scholarly work connecting small business history to the broader sweep of American economic development, and the Columbia University Press pedigree means the research is sound. But the dense academic prose and essay-anthology structure make this a book for historians and researchers rather than general business readers, and two-plus decades of post-2000 economic shifts aren't covered at all. Worthwhile for the right specialist; most readers will find it a slog.
