A genuinely fun Cinderella-in-the-frontier premise with a likable heroine working her way from powerless to agency — that counts for something. But the 1999 bones show: coincidences pile up, the paranormal layer is decorative rather than developed, and the reissue attracted little new critical attention to suggest it's aged especially well. A pleasant rainy-afternoon read for devoted fans of the subgenre, but not a must.
